The bascinet was a helmet without a visor that was worn underneath the great helmet at the beginning of the 14th century. Around 1450 the bascinet was often worn loose with a visor attached to it. The helmet has a pointy end to catch blows and because of its shape it was often called hounskull or pig faced helmet. A roundel was a circular piece of armour that was made on for instance the helmet, breast plate or gauntlet for extra protection.
This bascinet protects the head but not the neck. It can be fastened with a leather strap.
