This Roman pilum head is based on one of the many historical originals. Pila like this were used by the Roman armies between the 1st and the 3rd century AD. The pilum could bend when it hit an enemy target. Even when the impact did not cause injuries, it blocked the shield of the enemy, making the carrier defenseless for other weapons or projectiles. This pilum head is completely handmade. When the pilum head touches a soft object such as a straw target, the tip does not bend. This is largely dependent on the weight of the shaft, which was often increased in weight by the Romans.
We have designed this Roman pilum head because most of the designs available for purchase are highly polished and expensive. Pilum heads should, however, not have a shiny finish because they were used in large quantities by legionaries and making them so luxurious was not practical. This point can easily be attached on a shaft and replaced when bent after an impact.
This item is based on two originals excavated in Caerleon.
