This is a replica of an original disc fibula found in Gotland. It is decorated in the Vendel style. The fibula is made of bronze and has a diameter of approx. 3,3 cm. A necklace can easily be hung to it.
Gotland, an island on the Swedish coast, was part of the large Viking trade network of the 8th-11th century. It is most well-known for its archaeological objects from all over the world. Spoils of Viking plunder are found here, like the parts of a golden cover of an Irish gospel book, and even Arabian and Byzantine coins - probably imported by trade. Gotland lost its importance after 1361, when the Danish king Waldemar Atterdag conquered the island.
