Product description
The spangenhelm is based on originals depicted on the Bayeux Tapestry. Nose helmets of this type were worn across Western Europe from the 9th century onwards. On the Bayeux Tapestry, both Anglo-Saxon and Norman warriors are shown wearing this style of helmet. It was likely utilised up until the First Crusade.
Around the 11th century, another type of nasal helmet, crafted from a single piece, was developed. This design was stronger than the older spangenhelm. Spangenhelms such as this were, however, easier to produce and could be repaired during campaigns. The helmet bowl consisted of multiple plates joined together with 'spangen'. In medieval manuscripts, nose helmets of this type are strikingly always depicted alongside a chainmail coif.
The helmet is a fully combat-ready replica constructed from 2 mm thick steel. The two halves are welded together. The steel bands and 3 mm thick nose guard (spang) are screwed onto the helmet. It is supplied with a textile liner and chin strap, and is available in two sizes:
-
Size M: fits a maximum head circumference of 61 cm
-
Size L: fits a maximum head circumference of 64 cm
Both sizes weigh approximately 2.5 kg.
