Celtic-Roman sea horse fibula, silvered bronze

The fibula is a replica of a 1st century Roman original excavated in South England, now held within the collection of the British Museum in London. It is believed to have been worn by the Romans — presumably by Roman legionaries from Gaul — and is clearly crafted in the Celtic La Tène art style. Similar originals have been excavated in Gaul, where they were worn by the Gauls, before the style was subsequently adopted by the Romans. The fibula is fashioned in the form of a stylised seahorse, and the shapes of this piece of jewellery occur frequently in Celtic earthenware and engravings from the Middle La Tène period.
