The short-sleeved chainmail shirt is well-suited to those with a medium chest size. It is wide enough to accommodate a gambeson underneath. The sleeves cover approximately 2/3 of the arm, whilst the length reaches roughly half of the thigh. This chainmail size is recommended for those with a chest circumference of 90 cm to 125 cm. The chain shirt may be worn over a gambeson and utilises its maximum size of 140 cm under the arms. The chain mail is completely riveted beneath the armpit, so that the rings do not give way even during strong movements, ensuring it remains intact for a long time and provides lasting enjoyment.
Short chainmail shirts such as these were worn by Vikings and others during the early Middle Ages. They remained in use until the 11th century and made a comeback in the second half of the 14th century. From the second half of the 14th century, such short chainmail shirts were known as haubergeons — a diminutive of hauberk, or long chainmail shirt. Haubergeons offer optimal protection and greater freedom of movement than the hauberk. They were therefore also well-suited to wearing under armour.
Armour parts can be readily attached to the shoulders and arms of the haubergeon with leather laces.
The bare version is not galvanised and is supplied heavily oiled. Please remove the excess oil before first use. Un-galvanised chain mail should be treated regularly with a maintenance oil such as Ballistol.
