The name sgian dubh means: black knife. This knife was worn primarily in the sleeve during the 17th and 18th centuries. It was an old custom that when a highlander entered a house he would not bring a sword. However, in the event of an attack or a fight, he would conceal a sgian dubh in his sock. Should a fight break out in the house, the knife could be employed to defend himself. After Culloden, the soldiers of the Black Watch regiment always wore this dagger in their sock. It has a total length of 17 cm and is dispatched inclusive of a scabbard.
