The slender, elongated Norwegian spearheads (9th/11th century – Type K according to Petersen – mainly found in Sweden) were particularly well-suited to throwing. Their shape and weight, combined with the power of the throw, permitted deep penetration. On the battlefields of the early Middle Ages, Norsemen often carried several javelins, which they hurled at the enemy as the distance narrowed. This gave them the freedom to employ their swords, axes or heavier spears in subsequent hand-to-hand combat. The spearhead is well-suited to a Viking Age/early medieval setting and is crafted from hardened EN45 carbon steel. It has a length of about 41 cm (16.25 in.) and edges approximately 28 cm (11 in.) long. Using two pre-drilled holes, the spearhead can be attached to a wooden shaft of your choice, permitting you to create your own Viking or early medieval spear. Shaft and additional mounting material are not included.
