Whether employed for chopping wood, building ships, houses, and furniture, or for combat, the axe was an indispensable and versatile tool for the Vikings. The shape and size of the axe heads depended on their intended use. Some axes were also decoratively adorned, serving as a status symbol for their owner and often included amongst grave goods.

This type of axe head is classified as a Petersen Type A. Blades of this type were slender and were possibly originally developed for woodworking, but they were also utilised in warfare. This type of axe was likely made between 800 and 850 AD, though some sources suggest it remained in use until as late as 1050 AD.
