Product description
The oil lamp is a replica of an original from the second half of the 3rd century AD. Amongst the most productive regions of this period were the African provinces of the Roman empire, where many such lamps were manufactured. The oil lamp serves as a sign of an emerging new religion, Christianity, and is decorated with a Chi-Rho cross. The original was found in Northern Italy, though similar lamps were employed throughout the whole Roman empire.
Olive oil was originally utilised as fuel, though this oil lamp can of course also be burned with modern lamp oil. The lamp is fully hand made using two different moulds, and is afterwards baked at a temperature of 1200 °C. Crafted from red clay, terra sigillata, it measures 11 x 8 cm. Delivery including wick.
