Product description
From 1300 onwards the shape and strength of the sword changed rapidly, as the growing use of armour rendered a shield unnecessary. The grip and the blade became longer so that the weapon could be employed with two hands, now that a shield was no longer required. The large swords were longswords that could be wielded with one or two hands. They were the predecessors of the later and even larger two-handed swords. Large swords were used exclusively by infantrymen. The shape of the blade was at first wide and flat, later becoming slimmer and more pointed, whilst the tip was also made thinner so as to better pierce the armour.
