At the beginning of the 14th century, kettle hats such as this one, with sloping brims, began to appear. As metalworking techniques improved, it became more cost-effective to produce kettle hats from a single piece. The brim of the kettle hat became more sloped, permitting it to deflect projectiles from above. This reduced the impact on the helmet and the head. This type of helmet proved so effective that even aristocrats wore it. The brim offered protection against downward strikes and projectiles. The helmet provided an excellent field of vision, good hearing, and optimal protection.
Kettle hats of this kind were worn throughout Europe during the 15th century. One original is held amongst the collection of the Hofjagd- und Rüstkammer in Vienna.
