This type of shoe with a broad tip was popular throughout the 16th century amongst all classes of society. The style was worn in great variety and was even copied in the designs of armour from that era. Many layers of society could not afford new shoes and re-used the same pair time and time again. Several examples from the Museum of London show how shoes were repaired and adjusted to size regularly. This type of shoe was worn during the age of Henry VIII of England, the Spanish Armada, the start of the 80 Years War in the Netherlands, by the German Landsknechts, and during the Battle of Pavia.
Crafted from 3 mm thick pig's leather with a hard leather sole.
