During the Renaissance, the sword became increasingly a secondary weapon alongside the gun or pistol. The blades grew slimmer, a hilt became more common than a cross-guard, and the point was sharpened for effective thrusting.
The ricasso — an unpolished section of the blade — grew in popularity and was frequently employed. Amongst the most well-known Renaissance swords was the rapier, which was used principally as a duelling and fashion sword. This slim sword originated as early as 1470 and developed into a swift thrusting weapon without cutting edges.
The rapier is supplied complete with a scabbard. A similar model was employed across numerous Christian kingdoms during the 16th century, including Austria under Emperor Maximilian. Its overall length is 112 cm, with a blade length of 88 cm and a width of 3 cm. It weighs 1.2 kg.
