The burgonet helmet (sometimes also called a Burgundian sallet) was a combat helmet from the Renaissance. It was developed from the sallet in the early 16th century. Burgonets were very popular throughout Europe and were worn by the aristocracy, demi-lancers, cavalry, and cuirassiers. In the Anglo-Scottish border region, the Elizabethan Border Reivers were particularly fond of this type of helmet.
The shape of this helmet was indirectly influenced by the Greenwich style. The crest on this helmet, as well as its overall design, was inspired by the all'antica style that emerged in Italy in the first half of the 16th century. During the Renaissance, there was a particular fascination with classical antiquity, which influenced the development of plate armour. The steel crest is based on the stylised helmet crests of Roman legionaries, associating the wearer with this glorious past.
The burgonet features cheek pieces with ear holes. It also has a neck and brow guard to provide protection against downward projectiles.
