Product description
The sword is a decorative replica of a well-preserved example recovered from the Viking town of Haithabu. The original may now be seen in the Hedeby Viking Museum.
The sword is classified as a Petersen Type K. Swords of this type were crafted during the second half of the 9th century AD. Amongst the most significant North European trading cities of this period was Haðabu (or Haithabu), which was renowned for its considerable wealth. The sword is believed to have belonged to one of its rich merchants or aristocrats.
The sword is furnished with a brass cross-guard and pommel. The cross-guard is short and decorated with figurative designs, whilst the five-lobed pommel is richly adorned with knot motifs and other early medieval decorative patterns. The grip and scabbard are both constructed from beautiful reddish-brown leather. The scabbard is likewise extensively decorated, featuring a brass chape, scabbard fittings at the top, and a brass belt loop. These decorations are executed in Viking art motifs typical of the 9th century.
