Amulet sun god Sol, 2nd-3rd century, bronze

Product description

This amulet depicts Sol Invictus, the "Invincible Sun", the official sun god of the late Roman Empire. Emperor Aurelian revived his cult in 274 AD and elevated Sol Invictus to supreme god of the empire; on Imperial coins he often appeared wearing a sun crown, riding in a horse-drawn chariot. His veneration lasted until Emperor Constantine I legalized Christianity, although there were still enough adherents in the 5th century that the theologian Augustine felt it necessary to preach against them.

Performed in bronze, with dimensions of 1.7 x 4 cm.
