Dresses like this were worn from the late 8th century well into the Middle Ages. They were an evolution from the Germanic peplos-like dresses that were worn in combination with a long under tunic. The diamond twill weave is a symbol of status, as weavings of this kind were common and have been employed since the Iron Age. The dress is constructed from gores at the sides for extra freedom of movement. This warm Viking dress is well-suited to early medieval reenactment.
