Baltic ring fibula, Kostivere, silvered bronze

Product description

This ring fibula is based on a find from the early Middle Ages from Kostivere, Estonian, dating from the 12th century and from the hoard of Kostivere II in the municipality of Jõelähtme. The rich decoration and wide needle tips are typical of Baltic fibula's.

Performed in silvered bronze. The original measured 68 x 59 mm; our display has a size of 5 x 4.5 x 1 cm.

Ring fibula's were generally used to cloak worn by men on the right shoulder, while smaller ones served by the Vikings to keep the neck opening of a shirt or caftan closed. Kostivere's treasure was found in 1939 in a birch bark box near a furnace pit. A nice addition to your equipment for reenactment from the early Middle Ages.
