The first recorded mention of a bascinet dates back to 1281 in the Italian city of Padua, where it is described as being worn by infantry. It is believed that the bascinet developed from a simple iron skull cap, worn together with a chainmail coif, either as the sole form of head protection or beneath a larger helmet.
The bascinet is based on an early type employed throughout Europe in the mid-14th century. The helmet has no visor, permitting an optimal field of vision. Helmets of this type remained in use well into the 15th century. The sides of the bascinet slope slightly, whilst the back of the helmet tapers to a subtle point — a feature that became more pronounced in later bascinets.
This helmet is well-suited to a head circumference of 63–64 cm.
