Belt end ribbon-animals

Product description

The belt end is crafted in the Viking Jellinge style (890–990). Belt ends were employed for both protection and decoration. The belt end measures 4.0 x 2.0 cm and is well-suited to belts of 2.0 cm in width. It is silver-coloured.

The decoration of the belt end depicts two ribbon-animals with striped bodies and long, stylised beaks. The execution of this motif is typical of the Jellinge style, which occurred from 890 to approximately 990. The depiction of the animal in profile distinguishes the Jellinge style from the preceding Borre style, wherein the animals are shown en face.
