Product description
The belt end is based on an original from the 10th century. It is well-suited to belt straps with a width of 3 cm and measures 2.5 x 4.5 cm. Belt ends were employed for the protection and decoration of the belt. It is silver coloured.
This belt end shares the same shape and decoration as the bronze scabbard mount found in York, England. It is decorated with an openwork S-shaped animal with tendril intertwining in the late Jellinge style. At the top, a triangular animal head can be seen.
Scandinavian warriors carrying their swords in scabbards with mounts decorated in the Jellinge style travelled all over Europe. The shape of this piece permits it to be used as both a belt end and a scabbard mount.
