Product description
The berdiche is a poleaxe that was mainly used from the 14th to the 17th century in Eastern Europe and Russia. Unlike a smaller hand axe, this weapon had a long, curved blade on a long shaft, which gave the wielder extra reach. The design follows the tradition of the earlier Viking axe and the Danish battle axe, where the broad cutting edge was used both for chopping and for hooking.
This reproduction covers the axe head only; a shaft is not included. The head is forged from untreated carbon steel and has a sharp tip in the 'punta viva' style. Because the steel is untreated, it can rust – rub it regularly with a light coat of oil. Shape and materials follow those of historical originals.
This berdiche head is intended for re-enactment, living history and collectors, and makes an excellent decorative, historically accurate piece in a weapons collection. It is not intended for actual combat.
