Merovingian Bird Whorl Pendant Aschheim, silvered bronze

Product description

This pendant is based on an early medieval Bavarian disc fibula from the Merovingian period, found in Aschheim in southern Germany and dating to around the 6th century. The motif shows four bird of prey heads facing left, arranged in a vertebral shape, with eyes of red glass and flanking braid band decoration on the necks.

The pendant is exactly the same size as the original at 4.6 cm fibula. The associated Bavarian grave 10 from Aschheim dates from around AD 600 and contained the remains of an older woman who wore the disc fibula under her chin on the right shoulder, together with beads, a decorative pin and a ring.
