The chainmail coif was worn from at least the 11th century AD. Chainmail coifs could be worn alone or beneath a helmet. Many illustrations, such as those in the Morgan Bible from 1250, show the chainmail coif worn snugly around the head. Sometimes leather laces were employed at the top of the coif to better shape it to the head. The bottom of the collar could also be secured to the gambeson or hauberk with leather laces to keep the coif in place. For added comfort, a textile cap or arming cap could be worn beneath the chainmail coif.
The chainmail coif is constructed from riveted mild steel rings woven in a 4:1 pattern. The rings have an inner diameter of 10 mm. The coif fits all head sizes. It is crafted from blackened (bronzed) rings. The lower edge and around the visor are finished with a row of brass rings.
