Borre-Jellinge style buckle gripping-beast, silvered

Product description

The Viking buckle is based on motifs in two Viking art styles from the 9th–10th century. It is well-suited to belt straps with a width of 3 cm and measures 4.5 x 4.5 cm. The decoration on this buckle depicts a mask-like animal head en face with two large eyes at the centre of the buckle and its two gripping hands. This is the Borre style gripping-beast decoration. The buckle also shows an overlap with the Jellinge style that followed the Borre style: a ribbon-animal like motif that fills the whole surface of the buckle. Historical examples of a combination of these two styles may be found in, amongst others, the Vårby hoard and the Gnëzdovo hoard.
