The word cignus is Latin for 'swan'. The term cignus is employed by archaeologists for a type of spoon that is often crafted from bronze and whose handle is shaped like a swan's neck. These types of spoons are mainly found in excavations of fourth and fifth century Roman hoards. Examples of finds of the cignus are the Thetford Hoard and the Hoxne Hoard. The Hoxne Hoard in Suffolk is the largest find of late Roman silver and gold ever excavated in England.
The cignus is a fine asset for collectors of late Roman replicas, re-enactors and museums.
