Product description
This bronze pendant is shaped as Mjölnir, the hammer of Thor, and decorated with a rune inscription that gives the amulet an authentic, early medieval character.
Thor was the most revered god of the Viking Age and his hammer was worn by both men and women: around a thousand examples have now been found, scattered across Scandinavia, England, Germany, the Baltic states and Russia. Most are simple iron or silver; only about a hundred are as richly decorated as this design. Thor's hammer likely goes back to older Germanic amulets, such as the club-shaped pendants from Roman times that were associated with the god Donar; the earliest examples date from the Migration Period and Vendel period, from around 540 AD onwards.
Thor's hammer became truly popular only during the Viking Age, possibly as a pagan counterweight to the emerging Christian cross. This pendant is supplied on a leather cord and makes a charming piece of jewelry with your clothing or as a daily accessory, and a lovely gift for lovers of Norse mythology.
