The buckler is classified as a Type Ia according to Herbert Schmidt, featuring a round shape with straight edges. The earliest depictions of this type appear in the early 14th-century Tower manuscript, though such weapons were likely already in use during the 13th century. Bucklers of this form remained in use until the 16th century.

The buckler is constructed from a leather covering for additional protection. Bucklers of this kind were employed primarily during the Renaissance, although the type is considerably older. This weapon is particularly well-suited to use in combination with a one-handed sword or a bow.

It measures 38 cm in diameter, weighs 2.3 kg, and is 2.0 mm thick.
