Product description
The bust is a replica of the statue of Emperor Trajanus. Such statues were often painted to make them appear lifelike.
Trajanus (Latin: Marcus Ulpius Nerva Traianus Augustus; Itálica, 18 September 53 – Selinus, 9 August 117) was a Roman emperor from 98 to 117. He was born into a non-Patrician family in the province of Hispania Baetica, in Spain. His fame increased during the reign of Emperor Domitianus, during which he served as a legatus legionis in Hispania Tarraconensis. In 89, he supported the emperor against a rebellion at the Rhine led by Antonius Saturninus. In September 96, Domitianus was succeeded by Marcus Cocceius Nerva, an elderly and childless senator who proved insufficiently popular amongst the army. After a short and turbulent period of reign, a rebellion by members of the Praetorian Guard forced Nerva to adopt the more popular Trajanus as his heir and successor. Nerva died on 17 January 98, whereupon his adopted son succeeded him without incident.
The bust is entirely handmade from alabaster and stands 14 cm in height. It is supplied with a black pedestal.
