Celtic Glauberg bust

Product description

Glauberg in the German state of Hesse was the seat of a Celtic principality during the late Hallstatt and early La Tène periods. Findings from a great oppidum (a Celtic form of urbanisation) were excavated at Glauberg, and several tumuli were uncovered. The great riches buried with the deceased within the tumuli are particularly striking.

The statue was placed upon one of the tumuli and is presumed to represent a Celtic prince or chieftain. It dates from the 5th century BC and depicts the figure with a helmet, a round shield, and possibly a chest cuirass.

The bust is crafted from plaster alabaster and is set upon a marble pedestal. It measures 27 x 20 cm. It is presumed that these statues were painted, as was the case with Greek, Etruscan, and later Roman statues.
