Charles V was emperor of the Holy Roman Empire from 1516 – 1566. This empire was the largest empire in Europe after the empire of Charlemagne in 800. He abdicated when he had to acknowledge the freedom of religion in Germany and, as a devout Catholic, this was something he could not accept.
This sword is an Oakeshott type XIX.
