Chainmail coif, mixed flat rings – wedge-shaped nails, 8 mm

The chainmail coif appeared at least as early as the 11th century AD. Chainmail coifs were worn either on their own or beneath a helmet. Many depictions, such as those in the Morgan Bible from 1250, show the chainmail coif fitting closely around the head. Leather laces were sometimes employed at the top to improve the fit, whilst additional laces could fasten the lower edge of the coif to the gambeson or hauberk, keeping the coif securely in place. For extra comfort, a textile cap or arming cap could be worn underneath the coif.

The chainmail coif is crafted from flat rings riveted with wedge-shaped rivets, combined with solid round rings. The rings are woven in a 4-in-1 pattern with an inner diameter of 8 mm. Total weight: approximately 3.25 kg.
