Product description
The crossbow was an important weapon in medieval European warfare. Crossbows were already in use amongst the Greeks and the Romans. A Latin text, De Re Militari, by military historian Vegetius, makes mention of crossbows. From Roman Gaul, the only surviving images of crossbows from Roman times have been preserved; these depict hunters.
In medieval Europe, crossbows were employed in warfare, particularly from the twelfth century onwards. The longbow was easier to work with, as the crossbow required a considerable time to reload owing to the crannequin utilised to reload heavy crossbows. The crossbow was regarded as an evil weapon, and there was a period during which Christians were not permitted to kill other Christians with a crossbow. After the Middle Ages, the crossbow was superseded by firearms.
The crossbow has been designed for decorative use. It features beautiful wood carving decorations. The crossbow is delivered complete with a crossbow arrow.
