Product description
The knight's shield, or heater shield, developed around the late 12th century from the Norman kite shield. Heater shields get their name from Victorian historians, who associated the shape of this shield with a Victorian flat iron. These shields were significantly smaller than the earlier Norman kite shields, offering less protection to the left leg whilst being much more manoeuvrable.
In the early 13th century, heater shields were used alongside the large Norman kite shields. Later, only heater shields and bucklers were employed. These shields were carried on the battlefield until the 14th century and remained in use afterwards for tournament purposes.
The heater shield is crafted from 1.2 cm thick wood. It has been painted white, making it easy to paint your own colours or coat of arms on it. The back features a grip. The shield measures 68 x 51 cm and weighs 1.5 kg.
