Product description
Leather vests of this type were worn from the early 16th to the mid-17th century by those who worked outdoors, such as gamekeepers, seafarers, and soldiers. Leather vests (jerkins) replaced the earlier arming doublets and were worn as a base layer beneath plate armour. Like the later arming doublet, this garment was also popular for wear without armour or entirely outside a military context. They gave the wearer a rugged, masculine appearance and offered good protection against the elements. From the 17th century, the buff coat developed from this garment, becoming exclusively military. Historically, this type of leather jacket was often worn over the doublet, and on occasion the doublet and jacket were matched.
The adjustable design of this jerkin ensures a good fit and accommodates different body types. The side lacing permits optimal placement and secure adjustment of this lightweight armour, providing flexibility and ease of movement.
Please note that, as the leather employed is a natural material, there may be slight variations in colour and texture between individual pieces.
