Product description
Oil lamps of this type were employed throughout the Roman Empire from the 1st century AD onwards. The oil lamp served as the most important source of artificial lighting. Today, oil lamps of this kind form part of the collections of, amongst others, the Landesmuseum in Trier, the British Museum in London, and the Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam.
Olive oil was originally utilised as a fuel, though this oil lamp may of course also be used with modern lamp oil. The lamp is crafted entirely by hand using two different moulds, and was subsequently fired at a temperature of 1,200°C. It measures 26 x 12 cm.
