Product description
Drinking horns were already employed in ancient times by the Greeks and Romans, and during the Middle Ages drinking horns held a ritual and ceremonial function. This huge drinking horn can be filled with up to 1.5 litres of your favourite drink. The interior of the horn has been treated so that it is suitable for drinking, and a wax layer has also been applied for additional durability. With this impressive drinking horn, you are sure to steal the show!
Historically, drinking horns carry a deep symbolic meaning. Almost all Indo-European peoples utilised drinking horns. Friends drank together from the same horn to emphasise their relationship, based on oath-bound reciprocity. Viking women are regularly depicted with drinking horns, symbolising the revered role of the hostess. The Greeks and Romans used horns during ceremonial sacrifices, which emphasises an oath-bound reciprocal relationship with the gods. Drinking horns were well-suited to this purpose, as the horns evoke the cattle that played a central role in our originally nomadic steppe culture more than 5,000 years ago. This is reflected too in stories of cattle raids.
