The kaftan, or Klappenrock, is a garment that originated amongst the nomadic steppe peoples, such as the Magyars, Huns and Avars. Early medieval peoples in western Europe, who traded with the steppe peoples, adopted this garment. The kaftan was especially popular amongst the Rusvik Vikings, with numerous decorations being added to the garment. The Anglo-Saxons and Vikings in Scandinavia also wore a caftan. Various visual historical sources exist for early medieval peoples wearing kaftans — amongst them the warriors depicted on the Sutton Hoo helmet. Archaeological remains have been found in Haithabu. This replica of an early medieval caftan is crafted from sturdy cotton and is well-suited to wearing with a belt. It reaches to the knees, just as the originals do. Please note: depicted accessories such as the belt and the fur are not included.
