Product description
This testern, also known as 'portcullis money', was first struck for the first voyage of the East India Company under Elizabeth I. The obverse shows the crowned royal coat of arms, while the reverse features a crowned portcullis, a symbol of England's growing mercantile power.
Elizabeth I ascended to the throne in 1558, and her reign is often called the 'Golden Age': a time of exploration, flourishing trade, and a court full of poets, musicians and scholars, including William Shakespeare. This replica is cast directly from an original and made in lead-free tin, and comes with historical background information.
A fine piece for collectors and for those interested in re-enacting or studying the time of Elizabeth I.
