Product description
With a flint stone and a fire striker, a crackling fire can be started in a few easy steps — though a little patience and practice is required. The dimensions of the flint are approximately 3–4 x 4–5 cm. Each flint is of a different shape and size, so there can be considerable variations. With a flint stone, an iron fire striker, and dry tinder, a fire can be started with a little practice. By striking the flint stone evenly with the fire striker, a spark is produced that causes the dry tinder to smoulder. Unlike the sharp-edged flints available from our shop, naturally occurring flints are usually more rounded and even. However, to produce a spark with a flint, as sharp an edge as possible is required. Once the tinder glows, a small flame must be coaxed from the delicate glow by blowing carefully and evenly, which — when "fed" steadily with tinder material — soon becomes a real fire. Dried birch fungus is well-suited to use as tinder, along with bulrush and fine birch paper, as well as half-rotten pieces of wood and resinous pine shavings.
