This small berlok pendant is modeled after Germanic berloks from the Roman Imperial period, dating between 100 and 200 AD. Birch locks were worn as necklaces by high-ranking Germanic women and were probably a status symbol of married women or mothers - they have been found almost exclusively in women's graves.

The original berlocks were usually made of gold, sometimes of silver, and hollow cast with fine granulation work of gold wire. The production required great technical skill, which was available at the time in many smaller Germanic workshops; finds have been made in Saxony, Bohemia, Poland and southern Scandinavia.
