Germanic Vendel helmet, 1.6 mm

The early Viking helmet is inspired by a 7th–8th century Germanic helmet found in Vendel in Sweden. Today it forms part of the collection of the Swedish Museum of National Antiquities. Helmets such as these were worn by the Germanic tribes, amongst them the Anglo-Saxons, and later by the Vikings. The helmet is a predecessor of the famous 10th-century Gjermundbu helmet, which was found in a Viking grave in Norway. The helmet is equipped with an inlay and chin strap. Its dimensions are 29.2×21 cm. The inner diameter of the helmet bowl is 68 cm (measured excluding inlay). The eye protectors are 16.5 cm wide and the nose piece is 12.5 cm long. The eye slits are 6.6×3.1 cm. The helmet features a leather strap and steel buckle closure to secure it. Should more space within the helmet be required, the helmet insert can be removed.
