Product description

Breastplates such as this one emerged during the late Gothic period (1440–1500). The Gothic style was characterised by sharp, highly decorated shapes. The design of this type of breastplate followed Burgundian fashion, ending around the thighs—similar to the fashionable doublet of the time. Breastplates of this style were often worn together with chainmail voiders, an aventail (standard or bishop's mantle), and a chainmail skirt (gousset). The arms and legs were also fully armoured, and this style was complemented by pointed sabatons that mimicked the shape of poulaines from contemporary clothing fashion.

Gothic armour was often worn in combination with a sallet and bevor, whilst the kettle hat also remained popular. The breastplate features an integrated plackart, which provides additional reinforcement to the lower section of the cuirass and creates the characteristic central ridge.

In the early Middle Ages, armour was often crafted from leather, and a warrior relied heavily upon his shield for protection. Later, as blacksmithing techniques advanced, steel armour became increasingly common amongst the nobility. Over their armour, noblemen would typically wear a surcoat displaying their family coat of arms.

The breastplate is constructed from 1.6 mm thick steel. It is equipped with leather straps for secure attachment to a backplate. The cuirass fits a maximum chest circumference of 130 cm and weighs 2.8 kg.
