Greaves were worn over chainmail chausses and provided an additional layer of protection for the lower legs of mounted knights. The development of greaves coincided with the evolution of the shorter heater shield or knight's shield, which replaced the older, taller kite shields that had been designed to protect the rider's leg. Heavy shields were cumbersome in combat, making the introduction of greaves in combination with the heater shield a significant innovation.

This armour has been designed to be worn with other pieces from the Gustav armour line. In addition to providing protection on the LARP field, it also offers an authentic medieval appearance. It can be easily combined with other armour components.
