Greaves were worn over chainmail chausses and provided an extra layer of protection for the lower legs of mounted knights. The development of greaves coincided with the emergence of the shorter heater shield or knight's shield, which replaced the older, taller kite shields that had been designed to protect the rider's leg. Heavy shields were cumbersome in combat, making the combination of greaves and the heater shield a significant innovation.

The armour has been designed to be worn in combination with other pieces from the Gustav armour line. Whilst providing protection on the LARP field, it also offers an authentic medieval appearance and can be readily paired with other armour components.
