Greaves were worn over mail chausses and provided an additional layer of protection for the lower legs of mounted knights. The development of greaves coincided with the emergence of the shorter heater shield or knight's shield, which replaced the older, taller kite shields designed to protect the rider's leg. Heavy shields were cumbersome in combat, making the combination of greaves and the heater shield a significant innovation.

The armour is crafted in the same style as other pieces from the Harald armour line. These lower leg protectors may also be worn separately, over a gambeson and/or chainmail hauberk.
