Short coats of chainmail such as this were worn in the early Middle Ages by, amongst others, the Vikings. They remained in use until the 11th century and returned in the second half of the 14th century. From the second half of the 14th century, such short coats of mail were called haubergeons, a diminutive of hauberk, or long coat of chainmail. Haubergeons offer optimal protection and more freedom of movement than the hauberk. That is why they were also well-suited to wearing under the suit of armour. The chainmail is constructed from riveted aluminium rings, mixed with rubber rings, and is lightweight and stretchable owing to the rubber rings.
