The hangeroc is a type of dress that was worn by Vikings and other early medieval peoples over a slip dress. The hangeroc was originally worn with turtle brooches, to fasten the front to the shoulders. The shoulder part was often much longer and shield brooches were used to lift up the front fabric just above the breasts. Most modern hangeroc reproductions are already the correct length, so turtle brooches are often not needed for practical purposes. However, they may still be worn as decoration, or to lift up the front part of the hangeroc to your taste. Between the shield brooches, women wore a number of strands with coloured beads. A belt was also worn over the hangeroc; this gave more shape to the garment, whilst also proving useful for hanging a key, a pouch, a knife, and similar items. This hangeroc is open at the front. It may be fastened with the cotton laces at the front, which may also be employed to create a tighter fit.
