The cross is traditionally made in Ireland on the eve of St Brigid'ss Day (February 1) and hung above doors or windows, to protect the house and residents. The symbol is probably older than Christianity: in pre-Christian Irish mythology, Brigid was one of the Tuatha Dé Danann. According to tradition, Saint Brigid of Kildare wove such a cross at the deathbed of her father, who was subsequently baptized. Together with the four-leaf clover and the harp, it is one of the most famous symbols of Ireland.
